Week 41 – National School feeding scheme

The National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) spent R8.4 billion in the 2022/23 financial year.

9.7 million learners from over 21,000 schools benefitted from this program.

Hunger affects 15% of South Africans, which negatively impacts children’s academic performance and overall development.

The program is funded mainly by provincial budgets, with KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Eastern Cape spending the most on feeding schemes.

Health impact of hunger on learners:

Cognitive Development: Hunger impairs brain function, reducing concentration and learning capacity.

Weakened Immune System: Malnourished children are more susceptible to illnesses, leading to absenteeism and poor academic performance.

Physical Growth Stunting: Chronic hunger can stunt physical growth and development in children.

Long-term Development Issues: Prolonged malnutrition can cause lasting cognitive and physical impairments, affecting a child’s future potential.

These issues highlight the importance of school nutrition programs like the NSNP.
